Transporting the seaweed: a labour to the rhythm of the tides

In order to harvest as much seaweed as possible before the tide returns, the seaweed harvesters use tools and means of transport suited to the constraints of the terrain.

When the ground is too stony, the seaweed is carried up the dune on men’s backs, using a sling, al loskenn.

Wheelbarrows are also used, as well as stretchers that then require two people.

Carts, hitched to horses trained to come as close as possible to the boats in the water, are a precious help in bringing the seaweed up onto the dunes.

Causeways, chaoserioù, were also built to make it easier to unload into the carts.
